Black has the strong defense 1.. Qb4! pinning the wQ which works e.g. on 1. Rd1? Thus the key is castling 1. 0-0-0 (2. Qd4#) provoking the check 1.. Rc3+ 2. Qxc3# and many more variations 1.. Rd3, f3, Nc6 (Nf5), Qd6 (Qb4, Qxd8), Ne6 2. Nxd3#, Qe3#, Qd5#, Q(x)d6#, Nf7#. Note that castling is allowed if the position is reachable such that castling is legal, in particular wR and wK did not move, which is obvious here. There are "retro-problems" where one can prove that castling is illegal, see e.g. the early twomover by Sam Loyd, "Musical World," 1859.
