2nd Prize. A difficult (4 stars) chess puzzle with some nice mates. The good, sacrificial, and well-hidden withdrawal key 1. Bf7! (to decoy bRd7 from d5 or guard d5) threatens 2. Nf5+ Kxe4 3. Ng3# (Qf3#) (further threats 2. Nf1+, Nd5+). On 1.. Rxf7 the quiet 2. Nc3! (3. Qd2#, Ned1#, Ned5#) Kxc3, Qxc3, Qa8+ 3. Nd5# (a pin model mate to conclude the main variation), Qf4#, Ned5#. Further 1.. Qa3 (Qc3) 2. Nd5+ Kxe4, Qe3 3. Qf4#, Qxe3#; 1.. Kxe4 2. Qf3+ Kd4 3. Nf5#. Often reprinted, see yacpdb, also selected as No. 286 in Breuer's "Ideengeschichte" 1982.

Conrad Bayer (* 10.11.1828 in Olmütz, † 21.9.1897 in Vienna) Austrian-Czech composer, see wikipedia cs, de, it, lv, ru, uk. The Czech entry is particularly comprehensive. Bayer was a follower and theoretician of the Old-German School of chess composition (see wikipedia de, fr, lt, lv), so his problems are expected to be hard to solve and there is a (partly dualistic) thicket of variations in the by-play with the main variation ending in a model mate.
